        Tower Enlargement Consideration

Having eliminated the plain solutions to the quest of a larger space inside the tower, the architect was left to seek the answer in a more complex solution within the geometric framework of the concept design.

To increase the open space inside the tower, the architect had to increase the size of the tower octagon in order to keep the tower wall thickness the same as in the concept design. This would ensure a masonry mass for the towers that is the same or greater than the one established in the concept design.

A tower enlargement is problematic because the position and size of the tower octagon is a key determinant in the concept design algorithm.

The tower octagons are defined by or can be seen to define the corners of the base octagon, folios 105:01 and 105:02.

The minor diagonals are attached to corners E of the towers and will follow any movements of the tower corners E, folios 105:01 and 105:03.

Any geometric change to the tower will therefore cause a relocation of the minor diagonals.

The base octagon minor diagonals cross from the façade wall to the tower exactly at the critical corners B and H where the tower is attached to the wall, folio 105:03.

There is an outdoor opening (90° open air angle) at the critical corners B and H that interrupts the masonry continuity along the minor diagonal direction, which is the line along which masonry is needed to transmit lateral thrusts, folio 105:03.

Therefore, the critical corners B and H mark a limit for the location of lateral trust masonry and a border for the minor diagonals as lateral thrust masonry boundaries.

The minor diagonals are the outer boundaries for any masonry that will serve as struts for the lateral thrusts, folio 105:03.
