THE STATIONS OF CHRIST'S PASSION GOOD FRIDAY IN VALENZANO

The stations ("Misteri") represent scenes from the Passion of Christ on Good Friday. They are realized in permanent life-size artistic works by master craftsmen that utilize papier-mâchè lacquered and painted, and are mounted on wooden platforms. The stations are carried on shoulder, following an ancient tradition, in a solemn procession around town on Good Friday. Ownership of the stations in Valenzano is unique. Most of the stations do not belong to the church, rather they are the possession of private families in Valenzano that commission these stations as a devotion to the church or for some other reason, and pass them on as family inheritances. They are housed in private homes. On Good Friday, the owners arrange for flowers to adorn the platform, for bearers (usually young, strong men) to carry the station on shoulder in procession through the town, and for escorts (usually, women and children) to accompany the station.
