Examples of Key Project Assignments

  • Promoted EMF work with institutional/government agencies and electric utilities for the last 10 years. Leading marketing and business development of engineering services with commercial/industrial customers and expanding to include energy, electric services, and information technologies.

  • Designed and collaborated to the development of Web sites for business and various educational/cultural organizations. Contributed site design, layout, graphics, scripting, navigation, flat databases. Managed web sites to enhance visibility, appeal, services, search engine positioning, and marketing functions.

  • Developing and marketing Web-enabling applications for power utilities in both engineering and business sectors, such as an Internet bridge to automate residential utility metering.

  • Developing extranet/VPN to enable project management and program operations on the Web. It facilitates the exchange of information among two dozen stakeholders of different corporate background and dispersed throughout the United States. This development will involve the reorganization of some business and engineering functions, and will result in less expensive and more efficient operations.

  • Managing conversion of older databases and applications to Microsoft software running on LANs with SQL servers. Completed conversion to AutoCAD and developing added GIS capabilities, as well as computerized data acquisition.

  • Oversee U.S. Navy's Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) Communications system Program. Direct ongoing field testing/inspection support and maintenance of interference mitigation in Michigan for 7 affected utilities, power, telephone and cable TV, and 2 mines. Developed cost-savings risk assessment/management techniques to reduce level of engineering and maintenance support required: Achieved hardware reductions in excess of 25% with corresponding savings in maintenance and operating costs.

  • Improved power-mitigation measures and restored U.S. Navy's Wisconsin ELF site; developed computer model/ELF Interference Analysis software (ELFIA) to calculate interference effects from ELF antenna design on area utilities. ELFIA subsequently expanded to protect pipelines and other long conductors as well as power, telephone and cable TV systems.

  • Advanced understanding of grounding systems in cold climates and improved design through deep-grounding techniques; studied/quantified seasonal effects of grounding and enhanced mitigation designing many electrical isolation techniques and devices such as power neutral isolation, shield-wire segmentation, telephone insulating joints, and cable TV dc isolation.

  • Studied effects of electromagnetic fields from power lines and made significant contributions to characterizing effects of EMF on area homes; assisted Electrical Power Research Institute test and evaluate various measures to reduce or eliminate ground currents, a source of EMF.

  • Consulted on new mitigation engineering challenges for both cable and telephone; cable where existing coaxial systems are changed over to hybrid fiberoptic/coaxial systems, and telephone where plain old telephone systems are being augmented with newer technologies to increase capacity and improve service quality.

  • Managed project for Federal Aviation Administration: Developed techniques and procedures for air traffic control radar and beacon equipment site selection; analyzed air traffic control equipment and operational problems; identified source of beacon-splitting problems at enroute radars.

  • Analyzed and identified solutions to police radio and commuter train communications systems; participated in many NATO projects for shielding against EMP effects.
