Smart Switch at the KiloWatt-Hour Meter
The smart switch is a device designed to be installed at a residential kWatt-hour meter to provide protection from line undervoltage (brownout) and unsafe voltage on the neutral conductor. It is a useful device that improves the quality and safety of the power service.
The smart switch is an electronically controlled power switch
that disconnects the residence from the supply wires at the
kWatt-hour meter.
Installing the smart switch after removing the meter. |
Wiring a cable to the smart switch to monitor its performance in this trial testing.
Reinstalling the meter on top of the smart switch.
Completed installation. Smart switch sandwiched between meter and base.
Control box, telephone line termination box, and test box (not visible in picture). The control box monitors the smart switch operation and transmits the information to a central office though a modem and a telephone line. The test box provides power for the operation of the control box. This was a special set up to monitor the operation of the smart switch during the evaluation phase.
| Portable and live demonstration unit for the smart switch. The unit is mounted in a case and utilizes a miniature simulated power line with live voltage, in the foreground, to show the operation of the smart switch. The demo unit was designed for training and promotional use. |
