Transmission Line Guy Wires
Anchor 15 Ever wandered about the joke "How many men does it take to ...", well this is not it. This was a working group convened in to evaluate alternative approaches to mitigate (insulate) shield wire guy wires on transmission lines. The group is evaluating plastic covers on guy wires and anchors.
The group included people from Upper Peninsula Power Company, Power System Engineering, and building subcontractors. This team approach was very effective in resolving the special engineering problems posed by ELF interference.
Anchor 12 Tar-based tape was used to cover the attachment of guy wires to the anchor.
Anchor 13 These odd-looking solutions were sought out because the cost to install insulators in these guy wires was high and the work would have disrupted transmission line operation. These alternatives were more suitable and appropriate from a cost/risk/benefit perspective because the ELF voltage is relatively low (below 25 Volts typically).
Anchor 14 Experimenting with sprayed plastics to form an insulation layer on the guy and attachment.
